My work resides at the interstice between art and craft, printmaking and design. My intention is to re-use materials in an inventive, improvisational way and create new things that last, as I have little fondness for fashion's temporality. I approach my work as a way to impart craftsmanship and content into everyday things. I make my pieces one at a time.
The name Allma is a combination of the word all and the Latin word alma, meaning kind. Allma is all kind.
I moved from New York, where I was born and raised, to San Francisco in 1998, after receiving my BFA from the School of Visual Arts. Here, I began to translate my experience as a visual artist into designing, hand making, and hand-printing apparel and accessories embellished with silk-screened patterns. The images are at once recollective and timeless, referencing flora, fauna, seasons, and atmospheres. Recent collections include one-of-a-kind dresses and blouses constructed from vintage silks.
Allma has been featured in boutiques throughout San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York, at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and on the pages of the San Francisco Chronicle, Lucky, 7x7, and the Bay Guardian.
